What people want here is simple, activity. And by activity I don't mean posts bordering on spam, posting pointless pictures etc.

And that is why you have a lot of dead forums because they stick to the same format, they don't reinvent themselves after a few months per say. All I see you do is complain, have you offered suggestions how to keep new members, outside of more advertising which is an obvious answer but that only does so much.
A forum is boring, you can only have so many discussions that they become a bore after awhile. If you'd supply video tutorials, an audio version of The Herald ... ect

Uh uh, I don't want an audio version of the Herald. Seriously, if they can't take the time to read through what is suppose to be a magazine, then they can just deal on missing out.

I think the podcast is a great idea, but I also agree with Kay-too long and too much effort. We are doing enough with getting so many articles out as it it- how we would get the thing read out loud after it is finished is just impossible.
However, we could possibly have an SSD Podcast that is released every couple of months, just a few highlights of the forums with some jokes and what not. I like the ideas floating around in this thread though, it shows that we aren't sunk for members after all. ^_^

Podcast, whatever, go with it. I don't see any point in doing it until there is more activity here.

To big as far as what, minutes, yes the regular youtube account has a limit of I believe ten minutes however that is a perfect length for a video tutorial but IF it is not if you switch you account type to a directors account you can upload longer videos. I've seen numerous people uploading full movies on youtube (they don't last long but nevertheless and that is how they do it) But in the world of tutorials I doubt anyone wants to watch more then ten minutes. both, believe me I did actually look into this because I thought it would be a good idea.

I dunno, personally I don't think listening devalues the writing. Having someone read an article doesn't take away from the writing - and who says we have to record every single article, or that every article has to be written? I think adding something - anything new - to go beyond being a forum is a good idea.
It's more that I'm not sure we would have someone who would actually do the podcast.

I have a voice, a microphone, above average audio producing capabilities and a lot of free time. If I knew what to talk about and had some material lined up, hell, I'd put together a little something every fortnight. Nobody said it HAD to be the Herald in spoken word form, and personally that would be a ridiculous thing to attempt. It all really falls back on the material, so if anyone has good podcast ideas, get your fingers moving.

Ok, the podcast Idea just sounds like so much fun to me. One of my many talents is audio/video production and on the plus side, I have alot of time. I think we could do regular bi-weekly podcasts about happenings around the forum and such and every now and again have special, comedic additions where we could have the staff and members contribute segments and I or someone else could make it into a show. It would be alot of fun and I think it could attract people and possibly get them to stay.

I swear I typed a response to this...
I'd kind of like to see what you had in mind if you didn't mind doing an example recording? Would it be reading the Herald, or not related at all? I don't want to take away from the Herald by giving you basically your new news show... and I'm kind of wondering what exactly you would say on it anyway... but I wouldn't be upset if you wanted to read the Herald and then perhaps add something or another of your own articles?
Basically, what do you have in mind?

I too like the idea of a podcast, perhaps even a youtube channel?
Going back to the starting post for a minute, general politeness to new members does go a long way, as well as patience, since often they don't know the in's and out's of the forum.

I've never really been a big podcast listener but maybe I would start listening if you guys set something up!
I've noticed that the majority of the members here have deviantArt accounts. What if we set up a SSD art group on deviantArt that could promote our members art?
