How long can Proboards keep going though?More and more people will be having 'real' forums on their servers so won't need Proboards or its code. Lets face it, Proboards is pretty much past it. Hosting is cheap, plenty of ISPs hand over free hosting with PHP and phpBB or Simple Machines have more features and can be customized more than Proboards, without the need of tons of JS code. When you look at forums running those, Proboards is no match.
The forum is also at risk, with social networking and IM - why do people need forums?
Especially, now considering SSD is really just a place to disucss anything, Coding & Graphics are side issues. 'Talk about anything' is not a great selling point, when people do that through IM and social sites, forums work best for niche areas and SSD now has pretty much ditched its two.
While it is true that we've moved in another direction to where we were headed a couple of years ago, we are still in a niche area. We're still a designing site, except we're a designing community. A lot of things happen off the forum, yes, IM plays a big part in the members getting to know each other, but they wouldn't have met one another if the forum weren't here. I can't say much for the coding and forum side of things as that isn't my area of speciality, but I think we seem to be doing okay as we are at the moment. Activity levels seem to have picked up a bit over the past couple of weeks when compared to some times during the northern summer.
