Click MeI just read this post...and what dawned on me was a bit sad but I felt I needed to express this out loud... I think that if we want to keep SSD going, into the future generations then we need to become less proboards orientated. Now before you all jump to conclusions hear me out. I'm not saying stop using proboards and move to another system (like IPB or something). What I am saying is that; the era of proboards is officially over. While proboards is still in use and claim to have over a million forums worldwide it is in my oppinion that many of these are not really active anymore (it is common to come across a forum completely abandoned), or have activity the size of a mole rat. This site/forum is mainly about proboards. We offer proboards codes, proboards skin's, general proboards support...the list goes on. While this was good two years ago, people no longer seem to want proboards. They are now opting for the use of forum systems such as IPB, phpBB... mainly (in my oppinion) due to the level that you are able to customize them. SSD is loosing members due to insuffiecient interest in the PB system. What I think we should do is slowly move away from proboards, because eventually, proboards will drag us down with it and it'd be sad to loose what was once so great..and what can still be so great! I feel that if we open up to the outside world and bring in more members, we could continue to grow and grow. If we don't do this it will soon become too late....and SSD will die....along with proboards....

We've been trying to do this since before Ash, Alan, and Peter left last year. We want to become a design community, not a Proboards support site. Supposedly with the release of v6, this is going to happen even more. We can't get rid of our Proboards stuff at the moment because that is still where the main souce of new members comes from. When I first joined, we catered to every need of a Proboard-er. We are now down to just coding. The databases are starting to dwindle, the support board is becoming more web oriented and even the request area is starting to have some more general requests. It isn't a drastic change, but you can notice the changes.

We are kind of doing some of what you mentioned with our community, especially art wise. With version 6, the looks aren't as important as the features - they involve the community kind of thing more. The features we've planned are building upon what we have built up from last year.
Where does it say that proboards is losing money? At over a 100 servers, it doesn't really sound like things are dying down.
The reason we don't have as much strength in the coding area is due to proboards support - so in that aspect yes we need to move on a little bit - but you can't always take something away completely that can be quite damaging.
We can move onto other things aswell as what we have already, but it cannot be instant.

Your not gonna make another forum are you? I think you should just put Codes. Then subboards, PB codes, IPB codes, etc; =O

Heck, I would rather it didn't have so many graphic features, so it would load faster. I think SSD should offer alot more towards web coding, and the like.

So long ProBoards support, greetings general web development and stable art community.
Ingenius, me thinks.

SSD has been PB's biggest designs community for a long time, so moving to IPB or vB or whatever wouldn't really be sensible. What would happen to all the posts?
I really don't see the point. This is a PB board, and I don't see why it should move.

Ingenious as it sounds, it was inevitable if SSD was to possibly benefit in the future and continue on. Yes, I agree with the suggestion.

This has been happening since end of v3 beginning of v4. Many others have had this suggestion as well

Actually, yes, IPB and phpBB coding sections could be useful. Most of the rest has been said already

I completely agree with what Dave says. The 'era' of PB is over. All my old P/boards that I used to visit have died, with the few exceptions (such as SSD, and other boards which have survived because of their excellent member-base and high activity levels). But yeah, move away from Proboards, focus more on other areas. Maybe vBulletin? Coding? I don't know, I'm better at agreeing or arguing with/about suggestions than making them...

Invisionfree? Phpbb?

That would kill off SSD completely and indefinitely.

Look at G101 and Zanmato. One died completely, the other struggled for a long time. Not worth it.

How long can Proboards keep going though?
More and more people will be having 'real' forums on their servers so won't need Proboards or its code. Lets face it, Proboards is pretty much past it. Hosting is cheap, plenty of ISPs hand over free hosting with PHP and phpBB or Simple Machines have more features and can be customized more than Proboards, without the need of tons of JS code. When you look at forums running those, Proboards is no match.
The forum is also at risk, with social networking and IM - why do people need forums? Especially, now considering SSD is really just a place to disucss anything, Coding & Graphics are side issues. 'Talk about anything' is not a great selling point, when people do that through IM and social sites, forums work best for niche areas and SSD now has pretty much ditched its two.

I think perhaps proboards will realease a version that you can host youself.....and take the IPB type strategy...where you pay for different stuff and stuff...
