Forget that 256 player online MP game Sony is working on...Microsoft has upped the ante. Or at least they are trying to:
A job posting released by the firm has called for "an experienced server developer to help develop our server architecture. We are building an extremely high performance system to extend console games to the server in new ways; creating a completely new set of web services to support dynamic programming information of games and scheduling data".
That includes a new gameplay scheduler for Xbox Live - which presumably lets players agree times to meet online - and this new massively multiplayer game.
Requirements for the role include "building a backend capable of hosting a 300,000 player game in real-time with real money on the line (anti-cheating, etc)" the posting says.
300,000 is a massive number of simultaneous players in real-time. Most MMOs use multiple servers to distribute their higher quantity of players. The only single-server game, EVE Online, has 300,000 players total - but only ever had over 50,000 playing in real-time at once.

Microsoft used to make some good quality games, they are obviously thinking in new ways with Windows 7 and Xbox Live. What they need to do is carefully plan what they want to achieve with this and how interactive they want the player to be in the changing of the MMO. Some are way too interactive and have no clear goals, others are constantly goal-searching games with no playability other than doing the next mission. Hopefully, they will succeed, if they do, it will be another leap forwards. I just hope that they remember not just to outdo Sony, but to make new and interesting things. Why is the Wii such a big success?

It's a gimmick that is worn off. Its a $250 board game.

Kay... the Wii is crap. It has what? Two or three good games? It's games are jokes. The Wii has no hard drive. It has no HD. Many games aren't even set up for surround sound. It's a shit console.

The Wii isn't for the hard core gamer. The Wii is for the casual gamer or for family entertainment. When I play Wii, I don't expect to see graphics that will blow me away; I expect games that are engaging and fun for one or more people. Where the PS3 & 360 fail to bring the generic family together, the Wii excels and that's why the Wii is a success.

Im personally not going to get excited about this. Microsoft hasnt impressed me with much of anything since the original Xbox.. They are going to find some way to screw it up.

The Wii has done nothing but bring you games you've played on an older console of there's. The few original games one the Wii can be counted on one hand and the satisfaction factor can be counted on less. Family games on the Xbox and PS3 are growing every month. Im personally not going to get excited about this. Microsoft hasnt impressed me with much of anything since the original Xbox.. They are going to find some way to screw it up. Natal....nuff said A guy at work and I talked about natal yesterday. I have my doubts but he has reminded me that when Microsoft wants something to compete with a product (Original Xbox targeting PS2) they do a great job. And researching the technology it seems possible to work pretty fluently. So I hope when I get it it's not a bust

Sorry, but the Wii is the only console I've ever really looked forward to, or liked. It's interactive, it's fun, and yes, it brings back some of the older games, with new and awesome ways to play them. I'm not a big gamer, I only like certain games, and I'm relatively picky about them. About 85% of the games that the Wii has, I'll play. Versus the Xbox 360 where there's maybe 10% I'll give the time of day. So for me, the Wii is far greater than anything else. Superb graphics doesn't much matter to me when it's something I'm doing just for fun. Now if I was a pro gamer like DS is, then yes, the 360 is definitely the way to go. But I'm not. So to you and other pro gamers the Wii may be utter shit. But you need to respect that there are others that the Wii is their best fit. You all need to stop being so critical.
