The Herald will be undergoing some major changes-- once again. But before we tell you how, or start ranting, we want to know what kind of articles you'd like to see amongst the Herald. It seems as if what we've been doing has gotten old, and boring. So what do you suggest? Comic articles? Fun ones? Serious ones? What? We will be keeping the of the moments, so no worries there. Shoot some ideas out way. <3

Some recent articles on Technology, Sports and World Events. Sure, the Herald is about the SSD community but I can't see why someone from the Video Board shouldn't be able to do an article or two if a new product is released in the Film/Video Industry. Same goes for Photography; How many photographers here now about the new DSLR from Pentax that can create HDR images on camera and save right DNG. There are a lot of stuff going on outside this community that also affect it. And some, if not most, of the members (myself included) don't really keep up with the advances/updates in our field.

I know it's not really my place to make this judgement, but I like the idea about the technology. A lot. However, the sports idea, while it seems good, doesn't really fit the needs you just mentioned. Personally, I think it would be a nice extra, but I don't know how big of a section could be dedicated to sports. I really do like that idea of the newest technological advances in the various fields of art. Kudos. #hat.gif#

Personally I think we should gear the articles towards SSD specifically. Spotlighting members and such. Most people get their news from various other websites anyways. They'll probably know all about whatever we write about before the issue comes out.

Can we have some hackadackery? Maybe something on OSx86 (it isn't illegal, you just break a contract with Apple). A contract, really? I don't remember signing anything when I bought my MacBook (other than a receipt), at most you void your warranty. And BTW; you can get sued over breaking a contract because doing so is "technically" illegal. The law does recognize broken contracts but I don't believe it says such acts are illegal. Personally I think we should gear the articles towards SSD specifically. Spotlighting members and such. Most people get their news from various other websites anyways. They'll probably know all about whatever we write about before the issue comes out. Sites like Engadget don't heavily follow Photography, Film, Literature & Graphic Design. There are better-equipped sites out there for that. Such as DPReview and PDNPulse for photography. If you follow Digg, Reddit or any other generic [technology] news site you aren't getting content related articles to what you are looking for. Engadget has several articles from this years E3 and as a Photographer I don't care about E3. Opening the Herald up to volunteer writers, or find dedicated writers, for each field could benefit SSD. The members are now contributing to a community wide "newsletter" and will have reason to read. Sure, the "Funny Quotes of the Moment" are great to read but there's no real incentive to read the Herald. The community here knows what's going on within itself due to the lack of active members. If a majority of the 16,000+ members were as active as a few of us are now the Herald would be a fantastic way to bring the community together. I know whats heppening in the Literature board, I don't neglect it even though I'm a photographer I read the posts but I don't comment because literature advice from a photographer wouldn't be quite helpful. The Herald really needs to expand outward and bring in related news to an other wise indoor community. I understand SSD use to be big and buzzing with popularity and some of the elements of the site still screams this, particularly the Herald. Widen the Herald to outside sources, but don't drop the community aspect, like I've said here and as the community gets bigger then the outside news will flow in as new topics and the Herald can once again be as it is now.

It may not be illegal for articles on hacking for the OS' company, but it is against TOS. Those kind of articles won't be in the Herald, sorry.

How about...
In each issue of The Herald, you'd have a photo essay. Or something group-made.

You know those stories where names are incorporated as words in the story (...not actual names)? That would be neat to see... although it probably has been done before, and isn't exactly an every month sort of thing.

Didn't Kari previously do one and not finish it? If I'm not thinking correctly, care to elaborate?

Obviously this isn't creative or interesting at all, but I mean something like... "While perusing the inter NET, Harry jumped up and shouted an enthusiastic 'O KAY!'" Like that, except silly and interesting. Oh, and not just incorporating names into words, but making names into words all their own... like Psionic could be incorporated to be the word sigh somehow. eLysian kind of seems like "he's listening." Things like that.

Kay, it's not against TOS. As long as we don't make mention of a specific way to do it, we can talk about the OSx86 project all we want (great project btw. And this is coming from a guy who has two MacBooks. ). Even if we do say how you go about doing it, the only thing that could possibly happen is you opening up you inbox and finding a cease and desist letter from Apple, in which case you take down the article. Oh well. But Apple is unlikely to do this since, as far as I am aware, OSx86 has never received any formal injunction from Apple at all. And OSx86 itself is a huuuuuuuge project while SSD... would they even notice a remotely hosted forum existed?

You can talk about the project in the article all you want. But talking about illegally obtaining a copyrighted program is against TOS.
Telling them how to hack it, is promoting an illegal activity.

Um... the only way we would be doing that is by telling them to go to a torrent site. They could, very easily I might add, waltz into an Apple Store, pick up Leopard legally, walk out, and have it installed on their Intel based PC that night.
As Max said, hacking is not illegal. Hacking and doing harmful things is, however, illegal (as in hacking into government databases containing classified info, corporate espionage, etc.). And this really isn't hacking anyways. From what I remember, all the OSx86 project does is convince Leopard it is running on approved hardware even though it isn't. (which, after I reread this, makes me think it is actually a hack of sorts so... just ignore the last two sentences. lol)
So, again, not breaking TOS there. Let's just put it this way. If Apple, who will sue anyone for using their software or hardware against their will, hasn't made a move against this project yet... we are definitely in the clear so long as we don't post links on how to get an ISO or something (in which case that would have nothing to do with the project anyways. Even the project doesn't tell you how to get a free copy. They urge you to buy yourself one)
