Have you ever felt flabbergasted at the popularity of a song or a movie that you thought was absolutely ridiculous? Most of my friends swear that the U.S. Billboard rarely has any music that they would ever listen to. Why is a song considered "hot" by some people while it's considered to be absolutely rubbish by others? Is it that those who listen to those songs just haven't found better music yet? For myself, I used to like some terrible bands simply because I've never really cared to listen to good music before. Is it just a matter of "maturing" tastes or is it something psychological?
For movies, I've found a relation between the type of movies that you like and your intelligence. I've actually done a survey of all my friends. The not-so-bright ones liked Vin Diesel type movies and the more intelligent ones went for the classics. There were exceptions off course, but the majority of the result supported my theory. (didn't gather any data, so don't ask)
I confess that I watch Bollywood movies. They have been coming up with some really good movies lately. But still, the ones that make the most money are heavily commercial movies with loads of terrible music, dance sequences and unrealistic-as-fuck drama. Most of the Indian viewers are from poor and undeveloped areas. Do you think that is the reason?
What are your inputs on this? If you are still lost, my question is, why do some people like terrible and unoriginal music and movies when there are much better options?
