Personally I find it a little too bright for my taste. It's an awesome concept, but I think you are right about maybe trying another lighting style. I'm not sure what you did, but the bottom brush (the largest) seems to look fake for some reason. It almost looks like you applied something to it.
As stated above I like the concept, the lighting is meh.

It's completely back-lit, which can cause some objects to look like clipart in a way. So that might be what you mean. I am going to reshoot it though, and hopefully soon, since I now have a job and can afford to get my hands on purple food colouring. I just have to find the time.

Might I suggest a warmer light instead of the intense white light?

I can try it, but the idea is to have a pure white background to properly light the glass and liquid. I'm going to try some different fill light ideas though to help out with not killing retinas though. Part of it could be if your monitor is very bright, since when printed this doesn't look as bright as it does on certain monitor screens.
