Photography Community Practice: Retouching
One of the biggest parts of photography is touching up the photograph afterward. It originated from the fact that there would be dust on the enlarger or negatives, and so things would need to be fixed. As we’ve evolved into the digital age, we’ve found we still need to do such things because of dust on lenses.
However, this isn’t all we’ve gotten into. We also have found we can use computer to retouch out blemishes far easier then with dyes, and the dodging and burning to fix exposure areas is incredibly simplistic. In fact, photographers have come to find that the digital era makes things much easier to do then when they had to work with film. Which is what brings us to our community practice.
Below you will find five RAW files that I am donating for use with this practice. Choose one and make a tutorial for us showing step by step how you retouch a photo. Use any programs you desire to do this. Show the before and after shots in the tutorial as well. You can be as extensive or as unobtrusive as you want. The important part is to just show us exactly what you do to retouch an image. The only thing you can’t do is total photo manipulation. So do not bring any outside photos into this.
If you wish to post the tutorials anywhere else than SSD, make sure you give credit back to me as the original creator of the photograph.
The photos you’re going to be working with are HUGE files. Each one is 22mp from the Leaf Aptus 22 back for the Mamiya, since they are from my days at the Hallmark Institute of Photography. So you will have plenty to work with. Crop as you wish as well.
I am going to close the community practice on March 31st 2009 at 11:59pm EST. This gives everyone about a month and a half to work on this, which should be plenty of time. Please post all questions and submissions in this thread. I will link to each submission in this post as well.
Here are your choices:
Good luck, have fun, and I can’t wait to see what you create.
