So I've been really interested in getting into photography for a while now and I've just felt so held back by my simple point and shoot camera that is literally like 4 years old. I've seen so much good work from people here as well as a few people that I follow on dA and it's really got me to want to take the next step. I just bought a Nikon D60 for $499 today and I'm so excited! Not that you needed a pic, but hey I'm excited...don't taze me bro! I'm also taking a digital imaging class in school right now for my major so expect me to be posting alot of me just messing around as well as stuff from class.

Awesome! Congrats on the new camera! And what programs are you going to be learning? I already consider myself a Photoshop CS3 regular (not pro yet) but that's what we're using. Mostly when I use PS it's to do something web design related and not photo stuff. I learned alot in the class before my accident, but we didn't get too far into the programs.

I would recommend getting lightroom 2. It's a brilliant program. For photography photoshop is slightly too overkill, lightroom lets you do the right stuff with great precision. If your photoshop came with bridge cs3 then I would look into using that before splashing out on lightroom first! Good luck with it all, it's great fun

You're going to find that photoshop is wonderful for retouching out blemishes and the like. I'm the opposite really, I learned first how to use it for photography and am now slowly learning on my own how to use it for other things. But like Assassinator said, I also recommend Lightroom. Not to do the whole job as he does, but because it's great for checking exposure, cropping, and other such adjustments. It also integrates with Photoshop, so they will work together to help you have a beautiful final product.

Forget Lightroom.
If you already have Photoshop, I recommend you Picasa 3. I don't even use the web album, but I use it to catalog my photos and do some simple adjustments (sharpening, b/w conversion, sepia conversion, cropping, rotating). Anything more and I use Photoshop for it.

I won't say much more about Nikon then their shit functions great. I how ever had a D80 and it died shortly after purchase. Their costumer support was shit, wouldn't except the fact that I knew the CMOS sensor was out in it with out taking the camera apart.
I ended up giving the corpse to a mate of mine who had a D80, and I went out and bought a Canon 10D.
More then likely, you won't have any problems. Like I said, their shit functions great, just happens some of it breaks soon after purchase.
As far as programs goes....
I've always just used photoshop. I have lightroom and I'll be honest, I almost never use it. Can't be arsed with it. I've used photoshop for so long that I'm used to it. We had Lightroom at school and I pretty much lied and said I used it. I've personally no need for it. I meter all my stuff in the field, I shoot film, and I scan. Now if wanted to do the same stuff I did on film, on my hassie, then I'd for sure use it.
I guess it just depends on what you're comfortable with. Personally I tend to suggest photoshop, but if you're just getting in to photography heavy, and you're going to be using a digital, there's no reason why you shouldn't use lightroom.
Next time I'm down there for a race maybe I'll give you a call. Let you use my stuff, and you can get paid a bit to photograph for the team I own.

I go to Tons of of races in Louisville, Yellow Springs, and races around there.
Like I said, chances of something happening are slim, but if something does, you'll feel like a bastard child left on a church step.

Epic, i appreciate you just using photoshop, but I do find lightroom fantastic for correcting bad scans, that is all I use it for. It's a great tool for keeping all my photos organised and is so much easier to use than photoshop (and I know photoshop inside out).
I would also like to point out how jealous I am of you for obviously having quite a lot of surplus money to spend on good cameras! I would love a hassie...

Have a kid now, which is like a money eating shit machine. A fun one though.
The H3D is one that the museum I work for bought me. Then I have a 503CW, and a few other older hassies. There's a camera shop in Columbus that sells used cameras dirt cheap.
I can still be comfortable, but, I don't buy tons of stuff any more, which means I don't buy as much camera stuff as well.

I find it so frustrating that I have all these cameras I wish to buy (the 503C/m is one) and yet I can't really afford to splash out... Being a student is rubbish, especially when you're preparing to go into uni...
I think what's stopping me is that there are so many mixed reviews on cameras I would like and a fear that the camera may not actually be functioning correctly so I would need to spend even more on it...
