Well, most people usually start off with a reseller hosting account, unless, they plan on making a big investment in their site. In that case, they will most likely go for a VPS. But for the people who have reseller hosting or shared, when do you believe is the right time to upgrade? Is it important for people to upgrade their sites once the traffic becomes heavier? Price is really the only barrier here but I know people who run some highly targeted sites and they have admitted they don't have a dedicated server for it.

Once the server won't allow you to run the software you want to use efficiently, that's when you bail out to a different plan or company. SSD's former host was complete shit. Would freeze out the chat (which the software already isn't very good for) and would kick people, etc...
Once the switch was made to the new host, everything was perfect.

Yea, I don't think the website has been down or the images on the forum since we switched hosts. . .

I still occasionally have the rare issue with SSD myself, but it's mostly just slow loads so it's probably just my internet. lol
Anyways, I'd think it's best to upgrade servers as you need to in order to have maximum resources needed to keep up with your traffic flow and content. in other words, a site that isn't very image heavy nor getting over 1000 hits a day probably doesn't need to get as much space as someone who has moved beyond that.

Only upgrade if things don't work. I'm upgrading wImg at the moment due to the fact that the VPS isn't powerful enough for it anymore!

I agree with Wrighty. You really only need to upgrade when things don't work OR If you want to do something that your current host won't allow or support.

Well with my little hosting venture Im starting with one nice dedicated server with nearly a terabyte of storage and 100mb/s unmetered bandwidth. Once I start needing more resources Ill purchase a second one and so on and so forth.
