If you could give one piece of advice to someone that is just starting out on their own site what would it be?
Mine is simple: Stick to it!
One of my biggest regrets is the fact that I'll run a site for a few months, get bored, and then start something new only to end up returning back to my old idea. Also once you have your site established try not to keep changing things like your forum system, CMS, whole layout, etc, etc. If I had only kept the site I am running now the same from the beginning I could only imagine where I would be today with it.
It takes time to gain a foothold...Stick to it and everything will work out.

well said. my advice would be set targets that you will be able to achive, dont set your standards to high at first. start small and work up. you dont want a massive project you cant handle now do you.

Mine is to start small and uncomplicated, especially if you don't understand code that well. And to keep it clean and attractive to draw people in, and make it more detailed as you learn and go along.

The first thing I would say is that its all about your content. Dont get me wrong, good websites look good too, but people dont come to a website to see how pretty it is, but too take to mind what the website is offering. So content should be the first thing to get accomplished.

Organization.
Make a Site Tree before you create a site. I recently had to redo a school's club webpage that had over 15 pages that I was able to condense into 4. Seriously.
ORGANIZE.

My recommendations are as follows.
Remember teh 56K and 128K users when designing and coding. That being said. Stay the hell away from a completely flash based designed. Optimize your site for web searches If you offer a service, paying for ad placement in google searches is NOT a waste of money Ad revenue is your friend. Discretely place your ads to where they do not interfere with the content but do make them noticeable enough to be clicked.
