A list of key terms that are commonly used by webmasters:
Add-on Domain - A domain that points to a separate folder on your server thus making a completely new website that is independent of other domains you use.
Anchor Text - The text visible in a hyperlink. Anchor text is seen as very important to Google because the text usually relates to the landing page so if someone searches your anchor text in Google, Google will suggest your site to them.
Affiliate - A mutual relationship between to peers or websites commonly expressed in the form of a banner or link exchange.
Affiliates and Merchants -Affiliates usually advertise a merchants products in exchange for commission if the patron purchases the product through the affiliates advertisement.
AdSense - An advertising program created by Google. Webmasters can sign up for it and will have a text advertisement placed on their site. Webmasters generate revenue for every time an ad link is clicked.
AdWords - This program goes hand in hand with AdSense. Webmasters can purchase text based ads and have them displayed on Google and other websites which signed up for the AdSense program.
Bandwidth - The amount of data that can be carried by the network is defined as bandwidth. It is usually measured in kbps or mbps.
Browser - A program that accesses servers and displays the information on your computer. As a webmaster you should test your site using the popular browsers to ensure that your page looks good in each of them.

Cookie - A file saved to your computer from a site that saves information from your visit. If you choose to stay logged in on a forum your information is stored in a cookie.

Data Transfer - The total amount of data transferred between a host and its clients over a specified period of time is defined as the data transfer. Regularly measured in MB or GB.
Domain - An address that points to a website on the internet. A domain actually points to an ip address, but it makes it easier that you don't have to remember the random numbers when you can remember the domain. ex. solidsnakedesigns.com

FTP - File Transfer Protocol, or file transfer program; the program and protocol which allows files to be transferred across the Internet. Webmasters use this to upload files to a server.

HTML - Hypertext Markup Language. This is the standard coding language for browsers.
IP Address - A unique number consisting of 4 parts separated by dots, e.g. 165.113.245.2 It is your computer's address on the internet. As a webmaster you can look up information on your visitors from their IP address.

Mbps (Megabits per second) - 1 megabit = 1,000 kilobits) is a measurement of digital transmission speeds.
Meta - A prefix meaning "information about". Information about data, or more specifically, the descriptive information provided in Meta tags in an HTML or XML document header about that document.
My SQL Database - A database contains all of the information of a website. You can link your site to a database for easy access to your content such as searching or editing content you have already created. Not all sites need databases.

Parked Domain - A domain that redirects a browser to the main folder of your site. Multiple parked domains will end up on the same website.
Pay Per Click -Pay Per Click programs (PPC) are similar to Googles AdWords and AdSense. PPC websites allow wbemasters to purchase text links which will then be displayed on a members page. On this members page, members will click the link and will usually have to have the page open for 30 seconds. Then, they will be credited for that click. Each link clicked by a member is worth around an amount less than 10 cents. It is a solid way to bring in unique traffic.
Plugin - An application built into your browser or CMS that adds more functionality.

RSS - Short for "Really Simple Syndication". An RSS feed is an easy way to get updates out to your users. Visitors to your site can subscribe to your feed and are updated every time you add content.
Server - A computer where all of the information that makes up your website is stored.
Shell Access (SSH) - Secure Shell or SSH is a network protocol that allows data to be exchanged using a secure channel between two networked devices. Basically it's a way to encrypt your pages to secure data moving along the connection.
Spam Bot - A program written to sign up on a website such as a blog or a forum and post spam.
Spider/Web Crawler - A robot program used by search engines to scower the internet to keep the search engine database up to date.
Subdomain - A specialized domain that lets you add a new website using the domain you already have such as: resources.whatever.com The owner of whatever.com might use this site as a download section for their resources.
