"Interview with Ovi" by Michael
First off Ovi, I'd like to thank you for agreeing to this interview with me.
You are welcome. Actually, I was kinda hoping someone will interview this poor me ;P
Ovi, you are a very active member at SSD, in fact, you go the most active award in the Excellence Awards. How did you find SSD and what made you stay active, active enough to get that award?
I was brought to SSD through Zanmato Designs, as far as I remember. I was just an advertiser back then. And then I discovered the battle boards and was introduced to Matt/Assassinator. You can say that these two were the main reasons I was active in SSD. The battle boards used to be my "home". I also did some rating in the Show Offs, but I eventually got bored of it.
You said the battle boards used to be your home. Why aren't they anymore?
I am not an active member in SSD anymore. I just drop in now and then and try to get my articles in for the Herald (You would too, if you were afraid of sheep).
That's too bad. Obviously, you are a designer being a winner of SSD's SOTW twice. What is your favorite style in designing?
It's vector. I didn't make anything lately though. I am more into skinning now, and loving it more than anything else.
Speaking of skinning, you have recently received resource of the month at SSD for skinning, what has gotten you into this form of designing?
I always wanted to skin since I first stumbled upon a few of x'ceed's skins. He taught me the basics and I worked hard to improve since then. But I wasn't very much into it until recently though. Now, I get my daily dose of inspiration from new Invisionfree / IPB / vBulletin skins or just by browsing the web.
What pushed you into your recent spurt of skinning?
Discovering IF Skin Zone. They have crowds of talented skinners. I just love their system, I think it's superior to the structure we have in Proboards.
What do you see happening with you and you're skinning in the future?
I don't see myself even considering it as a career. It's more like a hobby to me. I might try to join semi-professional skinning companies (i.e. Extreme Pixels, Transverse Styles) when I feel I am good enough, but thats it.
Who would you say are your top five designers or skinners?
My top five favorite skinners will be in the August 06 Edition of the Herald. As for designers, I don't really have a top listing. I like Reedy's originality, even if he has been producing some sloppy works lately. I love Brandon's work. Assassinator and DLT are great too. Those are are some of my favorite artists from PB. As for DA, you can say that every talented artist is in my respect list.
Do you have any advice for new skinners struggling?
Skinning is not difficult once you get the hang of it. Don't be afraid to experiment with different styles and color schemes. Who knows, maybe you can even set a trend for all other skinners. And, try to watch out for inspiration whenever you get the chance, it can be a good thing. And not to mention, try to be as original as possible and don't give much attention to what other people think of your work. You skin to satisfy yourself.
Now we are going to drift away from the internet world, what are some of you're hobbies aside from the computer?
Football/Soccer is my life. Other than that: Cycling, James Blunt, Some Basketball, Swimming, Emma Watson, four cups of tea everyday, Politics, Middle East -_-, Emma Watson. (Yesh, Emma is there twice =D)
Ah, footbal/soccer, a sport both of us enjoy. Do you play on a team?
Yes, I was the captain of my team last season. This time, I am just an attacking midfielder. I hope to prove them wrong in the field though.
Well, good luck on that! Contrary to your skinning, do you see your soccer/footbal going anywhere in the future?
I don't know how many times I've mentioned this. I want to be a Pro Football player when I grow up. And maybe play for Manchester United and the English National team. *dreamland*
Becoming professional is a dream we both share then. You mentioned that you play basketball, do you do that just for fun as in pick-up games, or do you do that on a team as well?
To make the answer short, I am terrible in that game. I just play it with my friends when there is nothing better to do. I barely even know the basic rules of the game, to be honest.
Wow, didn't see that coming. =P Well, it seems like you enjoy writing, being a member of both the SSD and Zenith magazine squads, do you enjoy writing things in real life as well?
I loved to write since I can remember. Even if most of them were rubbish. And I also have a tendency to leave my work unfinished. I have hundreds, if not thousands, of incomplete stories. And about the Herald and Aura, I write mainly for the Graphics department. So, my literary skills wasn't the best reason for me being chosen
When you say you write alot of unfinished stories, generally what genre are they?
Most of them are based on Magic/Fantasy, being a Harry Potter fan. I tried working on some Science Fiction stories, but I realized that I am not smart enough for that yet.
Now for a poor attempt to add some humor to our interview, what was your first opinion after viewing this? www.ugoplayer.com/music/doyoulikewaffles.html
The monkeys reminds me of someone we all know. And the waffle guy reminds me of my brother.
Okay. =P Well thanks again Ovi for doing this interview, I'm sorry you had to witness that video, if there is any final words you would like to share, share them now.
You are welcome. No, that video didn't bother me much. Final words: You are welcome. No, that video didn't bother me much. Final words *cough* :
I have a dream. I dream that no one will copy each other's style ever again. I dream that there will be total peace in SSD. No one will be picking on or flaming each other. I dream of absolute elimination of annoying advertisers and spammers.
