[normal]Interview Assignments
If you have a question about these or would really like to switch an artist you really wanted to interview in for another, speak up soon and I will switch them in. Otherwise, I'd prefer if you stuck to these artists so we can unveil a somewhat rounded interview board.
Grace: - 4 Interviews
1. Alan Becker
Contact information:
I suggest noting him on alanbecker.deviantart.com. If he agrees to the interview, he lists his aim screen name (noogai3) on his deviantart profile, so try to do a live one over AIM?
Background: Works mostly in Flash, but if you look through his deviantart gallery, there are a lot of difference pieces. I'd ask him mostly about his Flash background- and the fact that he made the Animator vs. Animation animations... both of them. Bring up the fact that the second one was recently ranked in the top 25 of the Ohio Governor's Show... and ask him about how he had the patience to work on the project for 5 months. Inspiration, etc- all that is what makes him stick out. He's a perfect example of how younger people are taking over the digital projects.
2. James Farr
Contact information:
james@gamesfarr.com is his email, but he says he may take a long time to respond. I would go ahead and ask him if he'd be interested in doing an interview, then include the questions in the original email to save on time. Be sure to set some sort of time limit- "If you do have time, could you please get these back to me within the next few weeks?" to try to keep him from just leaving it sitting around in his inbox... but if he never responds, let me know and I'll get you another person to contact.
Background: Created the Zombie comics, etc... www.jamesfarr.com
3. David Firth
Contact information:
fatpiemail@gmail.com - I'm not sure this will work because first it says it's full, then it says to email something there. I'd suggest emailing him there, but include in the subject line "Interview requested" - like with James Farr, I'd also go ahead and include the interview questions in the original email and request that he get back to you as soon as possible... not to be too pushy, but to avoid him just sidelining it.
Background: http://www.fat-pie.com; you know all of this...
4. Damian Madray
Contact information:
I'd note him at depthskins.deviantart.com. He's a gallery director there, so I assume he checks it often. Make sure to mention "Interview Request" in the subject so as to get his attention. Try to schedule a live interview, but if not, send him the questions over a note or to his email - support@depthskins.com
Background information: www.depthskins.com and browse his gallery around depthskins.deviantart.com. He has a lot of smooth looking websites and seems to do a lot of editorial/advertising designs on top of his site designs. He's obviously a popular, well-known artist. Try to branch past the traditional questions and ask him about how he likes being the gallery director at deviantart, his "tools of the trade - Macbook Pro, Photoshop CS2, Illustrator and Dreamweaver- like how he uses so many different types of tools to produce things... also try to ask something about the coding side of it and how understand how to actually make the website works affects his design... etc etc... try to find something that will help out people who are looking to become as talented!
Ryan - 2 Interviews (If you have time to do a third, I'd really appreciate it if you let me know later.)
1. AquaSixio/Rolando Cyril
Contact information:
Note him on aquasixio.deviantart.com. He also lists this email: sixio@free.fr
Background information:
aquasixio.deviantart.com and www.sixinside.fr/. He does mostly painting. He also often writes tutorials for people- something you should ask about. How he likes to help people and what tools he most often sees people abusing. Advice for those getting started? Ask him how he sees his art forms fitting in with the professional world: selling for advertisements, children books, or does he prefer to think of it as just purely art to be framed and enjoyed? Ask him about himself- how art affected him through his life (started with traditional works, etc?) Does he think his art is more of a personal expression of who he is or just something that comes to him and speaks to others more? Or is he just recording a story - because much of his art is very storylike? Ask about hobbies, etc and the basics. I'd also focus on the fact that he's from France. Does art transfer through languages and cultures? Get him to open up about these things and try to focus a little on his professional interests as well- any training?
2. Darkmoon
Contact information:
Note her here: darkmoon3636.deviantart.com/ or email darkmoon3636@gmail.com
Background information:
darkmoon3636.deviantart.com/ She mostly makes emoticons... ask her about where she gets the ideas for the the emoticons, how long it takes- animation tips, anything for people who are getting started? Ask her if she does any other art, does she do art professionally? Commissions? Where she first decided to do emoticons and in general art? Which her favorite one is? Are any of the emoticons based off of herself or her friends? She's young: focus on how easy it is to get started when you are young in the digital work, etc...
Whitney - 5 Interviews
1. Mynti
Contact information:
I'd note her on mynti.deviantart.com. As always, put in the title "Interview Request" to get her attention.
Background information: mynti.deviantart.com and www.myntifresh.com. She's part of the "Creative Staff" on deviantart and makes a lot of journal templates. Check out her gallery to have a feel for some of her templates. I'd suggest asking questions for tips on how to make better templates (as many of our members are learning how to design things such as blogs and even their deviantART journals...). Also ask her about her more personal art, also displayed within her gallery. She does a lot of digital painting, which is something few people at SSD really know about. Perhaps talk to her about how this relates to traditional art and whether she has any background in it... Ask her about her favorite style of art, what she sees as the importance in her art - what affects it... and most importantly, ask her about the subjects that most inspire her and whether she sees her art as more of a career or just a hobby.
2. Fernando Tabanera / D-strukiv
Contact information:
Either note him on d-struktiv.deviantart.com or email him at fernando@d-struktiv.net. He also lists MSN - dpx-darksoul@ofir.dk, so I suggest doing a live interview if he has time. Feel free to let me know once you've decided a time; I like his art and have been watching him a while, so if I can, I'll pop in and help out a bit.
Background information:
d-struktiv.deviantart.com and www.d-struktiv.net
Surrealist photomanipulator. Works with the human body- find out if there are reasons behind this. Does he believe it makes the art more personal, or does he just see that the human body fits in with geometric figures? Also, he is from Denmark. Are there cultural differences that come out in his art work? His art has a very unique style- has it been affected by anyone or does he feel it is completely his own? Do the messages within the art come from something he wants to tell people or ... where? Tips for people starting to explore surrealism? Does he do professional work or is it a hobby? Any other art forms he doesn't usually share? How long has he been doing artwork... any favorite artists? Musical inspiration? Basically... with this artist, if you look through his gallery- there is an interesting source of inspiration. Explore it...
3. Gilad Benari/ Gilad
Contact information:
Note him at gilad.deviantart.com
Background information: Photographer... he calls himself a conceptual photographer. Ask him about how this plays in his photography; does he take life as it comes, or does he usually try to set up certain shots. Where does he draw the inspiration from? Does he foresee professional endeavors, or is he working in them now? Photographic hints for newcomers? What aspect does he feel is the most important to focus on when taking a picture? - shape, color, form, etc? He usually has bright, vibrant colors coming through his work, so it seems he focuses on this... or does it just come naturally? How did he learn how to use light so richly? Any other forms of art that came before photography did to him? What tools does he use after taking the pictures- and does he see this refining as important?
4. Evilhomer145
Contact information:
Note him on evilhomer145.deviantart.com. He also lists both MSN and email as: Magnus541@hotmail.com; try a live interview.
Background information:
I'm mostly interested in his ability to render... and the creativity he uses in them. He uses Maya, Photoshop, and Premiere. Ask him about those because I've never even heard of Premiere, though I am new to 3D works so that makes sense I guess...He does a lot of natural scenes, while adding a stylistic approach to them. Ask him if he likes to show the world in a new light or whether he is creating his own... ask about the inspiration obviously - his use of color, the concepts that he includes because there are a lot of interesting concepts. Does he do art for commissions, has he had professional lessons? What got him started? Does he do website design; is there a type of art he wants to spread into later? What does he do for fun... etc.
5. I'd really like if you'd talk to a writer of some sort- some notibility. I haven't found anyone for this yet. If you can, please try to figure out someone that would fill the writing description... I know you glance around DA's writing more than I do... just check your choice with me, please.
Whew, that took forever.
I hope I gave enough information and suggestions. If you have questions, let me know. As always- if you can handle more, let me know and I will try to find someone for you.
Also, it would really be easier to do this if I had some suggestions to draw from, so please drop some in that big pot.
