Don't have Photoshop? No worries, a pricey program shouldn't get in the way of your creativity. Below is listed some free and cheap image editing alternatives that you may use to compete in SOTW and create your very own masterpieces! Free/Open Source Alternatives:- The GIMP: Arguably the most popular free image editor, the GIMP delivers many of the same features as Photoshop. Some complain that the GUI takes some getting used to, but for free, you can't go wrong. Price: Free
- Pixia: Another popular program, but from what I've heard, extremely hard to get the hang of. I'd recommend downloading the help guide and following the included tutorials to get the jest of the program and begin manipulating images to your liking. Price: Free
- PhotoPlus:
From the reviews I've read, PhotoPlus seems like a great free program. It supports .psd files, layers and comes with great photo manip tools. Also, there is an image mapping feature, which is great for web designers. Price: Free[/li][li] Power Batch: Power Batch freeware does batch convert, resize, rename, crop, rotate, and a few filters. Doesn't seem like that strong of a contender, but it does include a good watermarking feature, so you can prevent those pesky pirates from stealing your images. Price: Free [/li][li] Xnview: This program has a number of filters and effects available, as well as support for almost every image format. It seems like it has some nice features, but is lacking in some areas. Price: Free[/li][li] Paint.net: A Microsoft backed program with a solid GUI, layer support, special effect tools and a wide variety of other powerful tools. Seems like a pretty good program, but I've never tried it out myself. Price: Free[/li][/ul] Cheap Alternatives:- Corel Paint Shop Pro X: This program sounds like more of a photo retouching program, which is essentially what Photoshop was built as. Might not be the strongest choice for image designing, but I've never used it myself. Price: $30
- Photoshop Elements 5.0: This program is mildly expensive, but has many of the features that Photoshop has. Elements is pretty popular as a Photoshop alternative, but lacks some of the important features included in Photoshop. Before buying, be sure to read some reviews, to make sure that this program is for you. Price: $105
