Here is my very simple userbar tut done in PS CS2 9.0
I did thumbnails, since my first tut was all 1280x900 images, took a little long to load lol...

You will learn to make one of these, in a step by step simple process with photo shop cs2 9
Step one.
Make a 350x100 image(doesn't have to be this size, but it is the default) and make a 1x1 grid of black lines. Also lower this layer's opacity to around 30-40% for best effect.
Two
Create a new layer, to save time on step one this will be layer 7.
Three
Select new layer and gradient tool and drag left/right once you have your color/style picked out.
Four
Apply and position text.
Note, some people create a separate layer for text, but since PS makes it separate, it isn't necessary.
Five
Add a 1pix strip to all sides and set opacity to 80% or so.
Six
Be sure to rasterize all layers, or they can not be merged later on.
Seven
Now merge all of the 1pix bars you just made into a 1pix border.
Eight
Should have this after merging.
Nine
Create another new layer.
Ten
Select elliptical marque tool and select the top half or so of the bar.
Eleven
Switch to paint bucket or fill tool.
Twelve
Fill area selected with white.
Thirteen
Lower opacity to around 30-40%.
Fourteen
Deselect.
Fifteen
Select zoom tool.
Sixteen
Zoom to actual pixels and admire the work you just did.
Seventeen
Now to save, go to File, Save As.
Eighteen
Now, there are different types of image files and im not going to go through them all. Normally however, jpeg, png and gif are used primarily. Jpeg will be smaller in file size, but will degrade in image quality with each sequential save(which is why I do not use it); Gif has again a smaller file size but it will not degrade image quality with each save, but the first save will drop its quality because it is 8bit channel; Png is the largest file size and best image quality, it will never degrade per save, but its file size is dramatically larger than jpeg.
Now, given this is just a userbar, the filesize is next to nix, but once you start making backgrounds... a high quality background in png format can run above 10 megs per file.
Nineteen
Click ok and your done.
Note, by the end of this you will have learned to make this.
Now, you do not have to make it exactly like this, some people use gimp and some ps, their methods of making are different as well. This was just a simple tutorial to show you how to make your own userbar for websites and forums.
