This is for Photoshop 6 and up. Open a new image, 5x5, transparent. Grab your pencil tool (make sure the brush size is at it's smallest size) and make sure your foreground is set to black. Now, make your window 1600% so that you can see each individual pixel. now draw a cross pattern with your pencil tool like so: Then, go to Edit> Define Pattern and name it something you'll remember. Now, open up your image, in thise case ill use this image: Create a new layer by clicking ctrl+shift=N. Now, go up to Edit>Fill and select "Pattern" from the drop down list. On the "Custom Pattern" drop down list, select the cross pattern and click OK. You should end up with something like this: ^Now, all you need to do is turn the opacity down on it a little bit, add some more nice effects.. and you got yourself a nice lookin' image. Give it a try

not bad. pretty basic tho. i suggest toning the opacity down as you said and maybe erase parts to give it a more abstract feel.
