I am bored. That's right, bored. I have decided to learn a new language, but I don't know what I want to learn. Some of the things I have a desire to learn require complicated compilers, or in the case of php, a decent host. I want something that isn't that difficult to learn. So, if you have any suggestions, they would be appreciated. You are probably wondering what I already know, so I will list them: - Javascript - Enough CSS to get by - HTML - Actionscript - Very little Java (Might consider expanding, but I am not happy with the need for third party classes) - Little bit of PHP - OOT Thanks .

Now that would be a project. I might consider it though. I know enough about javascript and html from pb coding, so it wouldn't be a bad idea. Do you know of any good tutorials? I know I can google it myself, but it would be nice to have a recommended tutorial to get me started.

Ruby? C++? C#? VB?

I will be learning visual basic next year in computer science, and I don't really like compilers, so the C languages are a big no-no to me. Ruby looks pretty cool though. I was looking at the website, and the syntax looked nice. What is it generally used for?

VB is compiled. Ruby's used either for command-line softwares, or web-applications, I think.

DM would tell you otherwise.

DM would tell you otherwise. Well, learning the entire language would definitely be hard. The basic syntax is easy to pick up though. The hard part will be using it in things like AJAX, and other stuff. I don't really know much about it yet, but I like it so far.

I vote Brainfuck. It's a weird and interesting language to learn.

I vote Brainfuck. It's a weird and interesting language to learn. ... and a challenging one to learn . After reading through some of the coding involved, I now know why they call it BrainFuck.

How well do you actually know the languages you've listed? Maybe it's worth brushing up and going further than you already do with some of them....? (javascript especially)

(javascript especially) I guess that wouldn't be a bad idea. I have been having some troubles lately though. Once you learn a certain amount of information on a particular language, it becomes a lot harder to improve. I guess I could start looking into some DHTML, and some OOP. Thanks guys. I didn't realize how many different languages there were out there. I will probably learn some more Javascript, and then switch to some server side coding.

ASP is the devil's language. Stay away. BEWARE.
Try ruby, I played with it a little and it seems fun, though not very practical.
C++ is a very common language, that or C or C#. Try one of those, they could help you immensely if you ever make programming a career.

Just to be all technical... Flash isn't a language. Actionscript is.
