Its like cutting it into parts. So, say you have a concept image for a template, you would cut the banner probably using the crop tool if its a rectangle, the head/base images using the magnetic lasso, the on/off using the crop tool ect. Then, you save them as .png's or .gifs. What ever you'd like. This is my least favorite part of designing, cutting stuff. So, have fun

gray basically explained how to slice, but what slicing actually does is that in a template, it saves each image individually, so instead of having someone have to load the entire template at once, the computer loads each image individually, which generally takes less time, since it is less to load at one time, and makes your web page load smoother and more efficiently.
you use the slice tool, once you finish your template, just use it to cut around the different areas of your template, whichever images you want to load when. then just save them all (i forget, but i think there is an option to save all at once, into one folder), and then you are set.

Here's a tutorial that explains it quite simply. www.eyesondesign.net/pshop/slicing/images.htm(Basically, Photoshop's Slice tool is awsome, but its Save as HTML is NOT AWSOME AT ALL. Don't ever ever use it.) Do you know how to code HTML? If not, learn it first. There are loads of tutorials on the web, and you have a coding section here to ask in. And start small. Try coding small three-slice or six-slice images and work your way up as you become more confident before you start working with twenty or thirty pieces in complex website designs.

call me blond, but that tut doesn't really help me with slicing images.. I've never really understood how to do it, and even though you are explaining it to us the best you can I still don't get it. I would like to learn it though it would make things a lot easier to code, and it'd be a good thing as a designer to know what to do.
