Typography is one of the more unusual types of art and its artists are less well-known. It is still an interesting, different type of art however. The question you may ask is what is typography? Typography is using various styles, colours and fonts of text to make an image; the styles may be used to express what the image is meant to express. They can either be entirely text or may include other effects, images and whatnot. Typography is therefore a very varied type of art; some pieces use text to express an image while others use text to express the words: words can be very powerful, and when connected to art, the effect is even greater. Tears of Hate is an example of this; it uses a black and white sketch with orange and black text to, in this case, express how cowardly racist people are, and in this way it speaks to them. Typography can be both minimalistic and busy too: some pieces simply use unstyled text on a black background. Some Typography ArtistsZar Igor / mrgraphicsguyZar is an artist who often uses text to support images as a powerful means of getting his point across. He has a fantastic gallery with a variety of settings and scenes on deviantArt. Yury FrolovYury is not only a typography artist, but a fine artist too. In his typography works, he often uses Chinese symbols as a subfocus to a main symbol. Example of work

Name: Brett Age: 19 Hobbies: Football (english), Design, Movies. Website (if any): Extreme Data - exdat.proboards44.comSo I decided to pick on one of our not-so-long-ago Member of the month winners. So tell us, how'd you start and how long have you been designing?Someone told me to get PSP because it was good. So I got it, and then didn't know how to use it. I saw what stuff people could do in design, and really wanted to learn, so I started visiting forums, I came across a forum named "213", which xi0n owns. He also uses (or used) PSP, and was great, he helped me learn a lot of basics, and taught me alot about design. I started designing a few years back but had to quit because I had net troubles. When I came back, I learned even more through tutorials. I've been designing properly for probably a year or just over. I'm not someone who designs everyday though, I only design when I want to, or am bored. Well that's understandable. It is a hobby after all. What about a favored technique? And what type, like sigs, avatars, big pieces, etc.My favored techniques (I have 2) would be Mind flow and Abstract. Mind flow is just so sexy, nice and colorful. And Abstract is just great because it doesn't really need to be anything. I prefer small pieces, such as sigs, 'cause I'm rubbish with big pieces (aka. LP's). I work best with small spaces ya see. So you're not like all the rest, you don't use Photoshop as your main source of designing. So what do you use, and have you ever used anything else?I use Paint Shop Pro (XI). I have tried PS though, a couple of times, but it is hard to get used to, although PSP and PS are very similar and have a lot of the same features, tools, etc. I just can't seem to adjust, maybe it's 'cause I don't want to, I'm not sure. Plus, PS lags my PC anyway, where as PSP doesn't. People are always trying to convert me to PS though, but it isn't going to work, because I love PSP. I've never tried any other program though, besides Maxon C4D, but thats for modeling and not for the same type of designing as what PS or PSP is used for. Was there anyone that inspired you, or you looked up to?Not one specific person, no. I was inspired by every good piece of design I saw, and when I was a major n00b designer, I tried copying it/them. Now, I look up to anyone who is original in their work, but I don't try copy them, I try be original too. So is designing just a hobby? Or have you thought about it career wise at all?Just a hobby. I would absolutely love to do it for a career, but I'm nowhere near at a pro level yet. I just don't have the patience to practice for hours and hours a day, everyday like a lot of people do, and those who are at the pro level. But if I ever did become pro, I would definitely do design as a career. But then again, I might not like to design if I was doing it everyday. It would be too much like a chore, rather than something to do to relax. I've heard that too many times by a lot of others that I've interviewed. Any words of wisdom for those beginning to design, or those that are looking for some advice? As I've always been told by Prophet, who is a great designer: "If you want to become great, you must practice, practice, practice. You also need to learn to be able to take harsh criticism by others, especially if they are better than you. And lastly, trial and error is what design is about, if you make something and it gets negative feedback, just improve on things suggested by those people." Oh and one very last thing, understand that just because one or two people don't like your work, it doesn't mean others don't, or won't. Everyone has their own opinions, tastes and styles. So, don't moan if you get harsh feedback, just keep practicing, read tutorials to help you improve on the areas you struggle with. Great advice. A bit surprised that came from you. *giggles* Anywho, care to share three of your favorite pieces of your own with us?One of my fave pieces is this sig/tag, which no one else seems to like/dig: Another is this abstract sig that I really like, probably my best sig to date: and lastly, this sig I made for a SOTW on SoCal, which (yet again) no one seems to like, but me: Thanks for the interview, Mr. Stinky...er, Mr. Brett. No prob, thanks for interviewing me. Oh and one very very last thing: PSP > PS I'll agree with that anyday of the week.

Most of the top five artists this month will probably be photographers as I've been scrounging around and adding favorites to a lot of stuff on dA by photographers. But that's alright. So take the time to look at some of these great photographers. IvanAndreevich's photography took my breath away! Landscapes, waterscapes, and sky shots are his specialty, and I'm happy. He's got some really great ones, and I would love having some of those shots hanging on my wall! KsenKAT, guess how old this talented photographer is? 12 FREAKIN' YEARS OLD! Fantastic eye for a 12 year old. She's very talented and will definitely grow up to be a highly successful photographer. Colors Of My Horizon is her most spectacular shot. peterzz is another very talented photographer. His gallery ranges from the types of photography, and all of it's very eye catching. He's got a way with animals that just draws me in as well. Leo is absolutely adorable. He's a "snuggle-umpkins-sort-of-kitten". Just praise his adorableness. Ghouldaddy, good angles, very expressive photos, and a great eye is what makes this photographer a great one. Some of his photos make you tilt your head to the side and sa,y "Aye! Nice!" Make sure you check out his gallery. Pfalz, though not as well known as some of the other photographers, he's still got some wonderful pieces. Especially some under water shots. I envy him for that one, anyone got an underwater camera they wanna loan me? *giggles* But, anyhow. Take a look at his gallery, and see for yourself. So that's it for this month. I hope you enjoyed. AND if you have a problem with any of my choices, please do PM me with some suggestions then. It's always helpful.

AJAX, XML, Flex, Flash - new hype words of the web today. With the current attention at AJAX ( Asynchronous JavaScript and XML), several RIAs ( Rich Internet Applications) have appeared, one of which many would be familiar with is Gmail. Currently, the technology used for developing RIAs are diverse - Javascript (and thus AJAX), Java applets and applications, Flash, and to a very small extent - XForm. As stated before, most of the RIAs today are developed using Javascript (and thus AJAX), due to its compatibility with major modern browsers, and the fact that you do not have to download additional runtimes (like Java or Flash). Furthermore, Javascript has been traditionally regarded as de jure standard for rich website experience, from its previous incarnation as the DHTML (Dynamic HTML - the use of Javascript along with HTML to extend user experience, such as sliding menus et cetera, et cetera). However, Adobe is certainly trying to change that. The Adobe Apollo. As quoted from the site: "Apollo is the code name for a cross-operating system runtime being developed by Adobe that allows developers to leverage their existing web development skills (Flash, Flex, HTML, JavaScript, Ajax) to build and deploy rich Internet applications (RIAs) to the desktop.
Apollo enables developers to create applications that combine the benefits of web applications – network and user connectivity, rich media content, ease of development, and broad reach – with the strengths of desktop applications – application interactions, local resource access, personal settings, powerful functionality, and rich interactive experiences." Adobe Apollo allows web developers to develop applications that combines web applications and desktop applications - all using your familiar languages like (X)HTML, Javascript, CSS, and Actionscript 3.0. By downloading a runtime, users would be able to install applications made by web developers, which maintains the familiar look of your friendly RIAs, but with much extended functionality. One example of applications developed on Apollo, would be Peter's FontViewer. Note: You would need the runtime to run the application, available here. After you've drooled at the fonts available in your computer, take a short look at the source, available here. Web developers should be very familiar with the syntax and language used. After all, it's just Javascript, with additional libraries provided by Actionscript 3.0. One interesting thing to note, is the fact Apollo uses its own HTML rendering engine - the Webkit Open Source Project. WebKit is also the name of the Mac OS X system framework version of the engine that's used by Safari, Dashboard, Mail, and many other OS X applications. In case web developers didn't catch it, this means Apollo supports the <canva> tag. For those out there who have not heard about the <canva> tag, a tutorial on Mozilla Developer Center is available here. The <canva> tag basically allows the web developer, to draw graphics using scripting, namely Javascript. It can be used to do animation, and many other things. A couple of worthy mentions of frameworks on the <canva> tag are: - Ajax3D - a framework for 3D graphics using the <canva> tag.
- Unreal Soccer - a soccer game made using <canva> tag.
- CanvaScape - a demo of the capabilities of the <canva> tag. Highly recommended for a look.
This poses several interesting questions - What sort of applications will we see on Apollo? Will we see full fledged 3D, or near 3D, games? But one thing is certain, it's time for the geeks to take over the world. Check out SSD's discussion thread on the new Adobe Apollo.External links: Note: Adobe Apollo is still in alpha stages.

Everybody who’s anyone has heard of Myspace. “A place for friends” as their slogan states. In this review, I will inform you on great Myspace template resources, the safety factor, and how to utilize Myspace to its fullest. First, a little background information about Myspace. Myspace was created in July 2003 buy Tom Anderson. Many of you might know Tom as your first Myspace friend. But, due to a public dispute in 2006, Tom stepped down handing the reigns over to the current owner and CEO Chris DeWolfe. Myspace has about 150 million accounts as of May. They attract a reportedly 230,000 registrations daily. In addition, they are ranked in the top five for English-language websites globally, while number three overall in the United States. Myspace is basically a blog in a nutshell. Similar to Facebook and Xanga, they offer users to extract information pertaining to them. There are many sections which users fill out. Maybe it’s your favorite books. Movies and songs. Or, an area designated for your physical features like height and gender. Along with those “About Me” sections there are many websites that offer surveys which you can embed on your Myspace page. A popular feature of Myspace is the friends section. Every Myspacer can display their top eight friends in a special box. But, with a hack you can mod the section to allow up to 24 top friends to be displayed. And yes, there are Myspace hacks. Plus, to enhance your page even more, a popular theme amongst Myspacers is music. Many embed their favorite song and program it to play when you log onto their page. You can even post videos on your Myspace. I like to put music videos or funny videos from Youtube on. Other exciting features include bulletins, Myspace groups, and Myspace IM. There are many websites which offer unique templates for your Myspace. You can get it professionally designed if you provide some money, or find a free one. Below are a few high quality websites for Myspace resources. Free LayoutsMyspace SupportGrab-A-LayoutMyspace LayoutsOne of the hottest topics that people talk about when it comes to Myspace is the security issue. For instance, in one case there was a bulletin posted. Since bulletins are sent to all your friends and so on, it was seen by many people. What this bulletin did was once clicked; it led people to a fake log-in screen. This caused people to think they were automatically logged out because of some random error. So, they entered their account information into the designated boxes. But, their info was actually recorded and stored thus causing many issues. Another problem with Myspace is its awareness of children and their safety. The minimum age to join is fourteen. Any accounts with the age being 14 or 15 are automatically set into “Restricted Mode.” This makes it so only people on your friends list can view your profile. Then, 16+ have the option of “Restricted Mode.” Myspace was widely criticized because many adults messaged young children to meet up with them. Myspace became a haven for child predators. I actually have a personal account of this. On Myspace, I was messaged by this guy who said he lived near me and wanted to meet up. So, I talked to him and told him my age, 14 and that’s it. He knew I was 14 but still wanted to meet. So, I said sure. I told him Starbucks at 6:00 P.M. Did I show up? No. I then reported him to Myspace security for attempting to meet a youngster. Think I’m mean? I could care less. I saved a few other kids from possibly molestation. As a result of the constant contact between adults and children, Myspace imposed another rule. People aged 18+ could no longer add 14 or 15 year olds to their friends unless they knew their email and full name. Myspace said they have no way of knowing whether users are the age they say they are and say they have no way to prevent it nor legally should be responsible for children lying about their age. One case, a 13 year old said her age was 18. Then met up with a 20 year old. Her parents sued Myspace but lost. Finally, Myspace is used by teens for lewd reasons. One teen advertised a party in California on her Myspace. Thousands of people saw it and came to the home. The 19 year-old girl was arrested because she held the party without consent from the parents. Myspace has clearly had its fair share of troubles and things don’t seem to be improving. Another interesting thing about Myspace is the celebrity profiles. Many bands and celebrities use Myspace as a way to connect with fans. Bands like Maroon 5 and Jessica Simpson have profiles. Even independent bands have Myspaces which they use to advertise their music. Many 2008 presidential candidates have Myspaces, as do athletes, and T.V. shows. I hope you have read this article and have a better understanding of Myspace. I know I sounded a little biased, like I don’t want you to join, but I have a Myspace. It is actually a lot of fun. As long as you follow the rules and are aware of your surroundings, you will have no problem on Myspace. For more information on Myspace check out: Wikipedia
