Hey, it's me SugarDogg.
Incase nobody noticed, a few years ago I was a member who visited SolidSnake Designs quite frequently and enjoyed throwing my input into every little thread, whether it be in ChillOut, or Critique. I've definitely noticed an increase in members, but a drop in activity.
Why is this?
I believe that as time is progressing, so is the way we communicate, and work. I am suggesting that SSD should be changed from a forum to a pHp onine community website. The options are unlimited, and it allows members of the community to connect easier with other members and staff who share the exact same interests. This allows it to be easier for newbies to learn, while helping staff and veterans with...helping. It also allows entertainment sections to be completely seperated and distinguishable from design/coding sections, while allowing for mass voting/profile/community options. Basically, it's 2009. Forums are transforming, and the Internet is basically just becoming a digital neighborhood. Everybody wants to know as much as possible about the person next door, and if they want to be friendly, a pHp online community website with profile capabilities etc. etc. does just that.
Sure, it may be starting from scratch...But what could be wrong with a fresh start?

We already have a forum for coders whether they be into BASIC or C++, JavaScript or PHP. And already having such a strong member base that does art in one form or another it wouldn't be very wise to all the sudden drop these members in hopes of getting hundreds of new members. SSD already has one bird in the hand, setting it down to throw a rock at another bird isn't wise.
What if we miss? We'll now have zero members. SSD will starve and be no more.
I love using metaphors. I forget the initial wording of the saying I used but it's "A bird in the hand isn't worth two in the bush" or something close to that.

This has been suggested before, but SSD is one of the original proboards, and that is why we are as large as we are. Uprooting and moving to another forum base would probably be suicide, not to mention we'd be turning our back on our history.
And yes, Kay archived the coding forums simply because they had been inactive for close to a year.

It wasn't just my choice to hide the coding; and I wasn't the one who originally did. I'm sure Oliver and Car will make something of the coding database, but otherwise, the coding side of SSD has been dead for close to two years now.

I dunno. I keep thinking about this one and I like it.
Course Im not a person with a say. =P
But Sugardogg what Community software would you recommend?
I started researching this and the only software that seemed promising was Boonex's Dolphin. But if you dont license it you have to keep ugly links and banners to them all over your pages. And Licensing is expensive.
Then again maybe I dont know what Im looking for.

Why would we switch forum software? What point would that serve other than starting off from scratch?

If I understood him correctly he was talking about going into a Social networking/BBS type software so that it would be easier for members to connect.

Which, again, would be starting completely from scratch. If you want to start a new forum, go for it. But why shut down such a large (albeit inactive) forum just to start off from scratch? No large scale forum that I have ever seen has ever survived a move from Proboards to different software. In fact, it generally kills the forum altogether. Remember Zanmato? Crazy Design Productions? G101? Of those three, Zanmato and CDP survived a few months before becoming inactive and then being closed later on. G101 never got off its feet outside of Proboards and actually moved back and then, wait for it, died. It just doesn't work. Like... at all.
If the OP was referring to the actual SSD site being turned into a community, maybe. But the problem is that it isn't exactly easy to connect Proboards to another site. I know a coder who did it and was doing it very well at that but he's widely considered one of the best coders on Proboards. And we don't have a forum coder. We have Dreggy who will code for us when we need him to but he's not exactly part of the forum and has no real incentive to put that kind of work into all of this.
